Vital Signs: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante and other minor varieties from a 2.2-hectare plot of ancient, ungrafted vines (up to 150 years old). Vineyard work is fully organic, and the wine is raised for 24 months in barrels with an additional year and a half in bottle before release.
Uncle Bill's Take: Etna is a bit of a viticultural wonderland, preposterously beatiful with an abundance of ancient vines. At well over a century old, this vineyard needs little in the way of tending. The thick, gnarled vines turn out miniscule yields of densely extracted fruit every harvest and the wine practically makes itself. The result is predictably robust with equal parts flowery top notes and earthier base tones. It tastes unmistakably of a time and a place in the way that only the finest wines carry off.
