Vital Signs: Montlouis sits opposite Vouvray just east of Tours along the South Bank of the immense but gentle Loire. It exists in the shadow of its illustrious neighbor to the north and turns out fresher, less opulent wines. This Chenin comes from a parcel planted in 1979 named "Touch of the Mitten" because it gets cold there during pruning season. Raised in older barrels for six months with regular lees stirring.
Uncle Bill's Take: Xavier Weisskopf left a cushy winemaking job in the Rhône Valley to chase his love of Chenin. His wines are like him, fresh, expressive, to the point with little effort wasted but equally sturdy and potentially profound. This is clenched-fist Chenin, tightly coiled and alive.
