Vital Signs: Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s most widely planted red varietal. Like Syrah (to which it is often compared), it produces deep colored wines that have a wild plum/dark chocolate character, full tannins, and good acidity. The grape takes its name from a village (Avola) on the extreme southeast corner of the island.
Uncle Bill's Take:  This wine reflects a sense of place, and yet it is relatively genteel with a delicate veneer of new oak and enough bottle age to be harmonious and accessible.
