Vital Signs: One of the three Grand Cru ("Grosses Gewächs" in VDP parlance) Rieslings made at Gunderloch (Hipping, Petenthal, Rothenberg). The Petenthal site has sandier soils and smaller rocks than Rothenberg with a deep topsoil. The wine is 100% aged in 600L neutral barrels.
Uncle Bill's Take: The miracle of the Petenthal GG is the wine’s incredible ripeness - noticeably higher than the Niersteiner village wine derived from the same site - yet its blushingly modest level of alcohol and keen balance. It’s a wonder to make an ethereal wine like this in the ripe, warm, powerhouse 2015 vintage. Sporting a very alluring orangey perfume and orchard fruits of all descriptions on the long, vibrant palate, it’s just damned pretty start to finish.
