Vital Signs: From the Im Weingebirge single vineyard, the 2002 Riesling Vinothek has been aged unsulfured for 16 years in a 6,000-liter oak cask. Nikolaihof bills itself as the oldest wine estate in Austria, with a history dating to the Roman Empire. They also tout their status as very early adopters of biodynamics, having first begun to farm their vineyards this way in 1971.
Uncle Bill's Take: The collected tasting notes on this one are so fervent, I felt like I had to try it- it represents the fullest expression of Riesling from one of the world's greatest estates. From Terry Theisse, "The spirits yawn and stretch, and now the soul awakens... Walnutty, toasty, caraway and salts and the essential calm of the best wines from this family. It’s the quietest Vinothek yet, maybe why I adore it so, my fellow introvert!"
