Vital Signs: This hails from a steep-sloped vineyard on the east side of Seneca Lake owned by the Argetsinger family. The shallow, mineral rich soils of this vineyard gives the grapes a leaner fruit profile, with more floral characteristics and focused minerality. This is a famously lean wine but 2016 was a historically warm vintage that made for a much more approachable version.
Uncle Bill's Take: Argetsinger is a wine that rewards patience, almost severe in its youth but incredibly ageworthy. In a normal vintage, it takes five years or so to soften, but 2016 was so warm that this is showing beautifully. It's more honeyed and ripe than I've come to expect but nonetheless stony and pure, a tremendous introduction to the Finger Lakes Grand Cru.
