Vital Signs: Viognier is a “headily aromatic variety making particularly full-bodied whites.” It has roots in the Rhône but is also regarded as Virginia's signature grape. Viognier’s thick-skinned berries make it uniquely well equipped to withstand the region's humid summers.
Uncle Bill’s Take: There have been many winemaking crimes committed in the name of Virginia Viognier, but this is not one of them. It is intensely aromatic but not obnoxiously floral and pleasantly rich as opposed to overripe and overblown. It is a perfect showcase of the grape’s potential in the right hands.
